Million Dollar Dip Ingredients
Here is everything you need to make this quick dip recipe:
Sour Cream and Mayonnaise: To make this dip soft and easy to dip into, we’re avoiding cream cheese. You won’t need to worry about your crackers breaking when you dip them, because sour cream and mayo give us the perfect smooth and creamy dip texture. Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar will give you the most flavor. I like using yellow cheddar for color, but you can certainly replace it with white cheddar if you prefer. Bacon Bits: This recipe is often made with pre-cooked, pre-packaged bacon bits, but I highly suggest that you cook up a few slices of bacon and chop them up yourself. 6-8 slices of bacon should be enough to give you a half cup of bits. Green Onions: Slice the green parts of the onions thinly. Seasonings: Black Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and Salt. Since cheddar and bacon are salty already, you may not need to add salt. Add it at the end, only if you think it needs it.
Once you have the ingredients prepped, this recipe is as easy as just stirring everything together in a bowl! Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
How To Make Million Dollar Dip
Recipe Tips
Try toasting the almonds. It’s not entirely necessary, but for some extra flavor, toast the nuts in a dry skillet for a few minutes. Let them cool before adding them to the dip. Shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheddar cheese has starches added to keep it from clumping together. This can take away from the flavor and texture of the cheese. Plus, it’s less expensive to buy cheese in a block and grate it yourself! Add some spice! A pinch of cayenne pepper will add a delicious kick of flavor. Make it pretty. Set aside some bacon, cheese, and green onions so that you can sprinkle them on top of your million dollar dip before serving it.
Storing Tips
Wrap the dip tightly with plastic wrap or transfer it to an airtight container. It will stay in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If you’d like to make this dip ahead of time, I suggest serving it within 24 hours of mixing it. Be sure to serve million dollar dip cold, and avoid leaving it at room temperature for lengths of time. Because this dip is made with mayonnaise, it will not freeze well.
What To Serve With Million Dollar Dip
You have to have good dippers! I love this with salty, buttery Ritz crackers, but you can also try tortilla chips, pita chips, or bagel chips. For a lighter option, serve million dollar dip with fresh veggies like carrot sticks, sliced bell peppers, cucumbers, or celery sticks.
Why is it called million dollar dip?
This recipe was said to have been created by Helen Corbitt and served at the Zodiac Room (a restaurant inside of a Dallas Texas Neiman Marcus store) in the 1950’s. It was first called simply “Neiman Marcus Dip”, but the name has changed. Maybe because the Zodiac Room was such an upscale place to eat, or maybe because the rich ingredients in this recipe make it taste like a million bucks! A fun fact: Helen Corbitt is the same woman who is credited for creating Texas Caviar dip too!
How long is million dollar dip good for?
You can store this dip in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 5 days, depending on the initial freshness of your ingredients. Be sure not to leave it out at room temperature for much time if you plan to store it for later.
