Berries: Fresh or frozen berries work great here! I always keep a bag of mixed frozen berries in my freezer, it’s inexpensive, and means that I can make this smoothie even when berries are not in season. I also love the fact that I don’t need to use them up quickly as I would when I buy fresh berries. The mix that I usually buy contains raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and sometimes red currants, and black currants too. You can also use cherry berry blend if you like. Banana: Adds sweetness and creaminess to your smoothie. Berries are tart, so balancing the flavor with banana makes this smoothie perfect. Oats: I like adding oats to my morning smoothies for extra nutrients, and it makes the smoothie thicker too. Oats won’t add any flavor to the smoothie. Yogurt: Plain or Greek yogurt adds protein, creaminess, and richness. The yogurt works as a thickener, if you skip it you will get a thinner smoothie. Liquid: I usually go for plant-based milk or coconut water, but you can also do regular dairy milk, apple juice, or just water. Honey: Optional for extra sweetness. Can be substituted with maple, agave syrup, or left out.

Omega 3: Throw in a tablespoon of flax seed or chia seed if you’re using a high powdered blender for some added omega 3. Add Some Greens: Add fresh or frozen spinach or kale to the smoothie for more nutrients. Don’t make it too sweet! If your liquid of choice is apple or grape juice, I recommend that you skip the honey. Make a PBJ smoothie, and add a couple of tablespoons of creamy peanut butter (or almond butter) before blending. Add More Fruit, and throw in some frozen pineapple or mango for a tropical spin on the smoothie. Frozen Fruit: If you have a frozen banana, that would also work here. More Flavor Options: Go crazy with your smoothie, you can add some pure vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, or anything else that you love and pairs well with the berry flavor.
Storing Tips
Smoothies are meant to be consumed right away, but if you’ve too much you can store it in a sealed jar for up to 24 hours. Shake well before consuming.
