Many years ago, my best friend gave me her family’s recipe for the perfect margarita. The secret to this perfect margarita was making a mixture of water, sugar, fresh lime, and fresh lemon juice. Meet your new favorite recipe: Homemade Margarita Mix. It is so simple to make, but makes for the absolute best margaritas.

Margarita Tips

Use good quality tequila. The best tequila for any cocktail is one that is labeled “100% agave.” I suggest using a gold tequila, as it has been aged longer and has a richer flavor than silver tequila. Don’t skip salting the rim. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass and dip it in a shallow plate of kosher salt to rim the glass. Enjoy the salty goodness with each sip!

Storing Margarita Mix

Homemade margarita mix can be stored in a jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. If you want it to last longer, it can also be frozen! Transfer the mix to a freezer-safe container, leaving room at the top for it to expand, and store in the freezer for up to three months. Keep it on hand for any time a craving for a refreshing margarita strikes! Give it a good stir or shake if it has been sitting.

Sugar: Adds the perfect amount of sweetness. When simmered with water, the sugar dissolves making a simple syrup that dissolves into cold liquids better than sugar alone. Fresh lemons and limes: The combination of both lemon and lime juices provides a refreshing tart citrus flavor. Fresh citrus juice always has the best and most refreshing flavor, so buying some lemons and limes and juicing them really makes this the best margarita mix. I share more on how to get the most juice from your lemons and limes below.

Make a simple syrup. Stir together sugar and water in a small saucepan and simmer until it is fully dissolved. Let it cool. Pour it into a jar and let it come to room temperature. Add the lemon and lime juices. Enjoy right away or store for later. You are ready to make a single margarita or an entire pitcher!

Put the fruit in the microwave for 10 seconds then roll it on the counter for a few seconds to get the juices flowing. After microwaving and rolling the fruit, I use a citrus juicer, a handy tool that helps get the most juice out. Strain the juice to remove any pulp and seeds before adding it to the recipe.

Prepare your glasses. Salt the rim and fill with ice. Mix ingredients. Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake to combine. Strain into the prepared glasses and enjoy!
