When you make your own spice blends and seasonings, you ensure that they’re 100% natural and without any added additives or sodium. It’s also much cheaper to make your own homemade seasonings, and a great way to ensure consistency in all of your homemade meals. I always make all of my seasonings at home. I mean, I never buy any seasoning blends and I truly enjoy mixing fragrant spices and dried herbs to get the blend that I want rather than buying a premixed store-bought mixture. I even make little jars of seasonings at Christmas and give these to my friends and family. They make great gifts as they’re always made with high quality (and sometimes homegrown) herbs and spices. I also love the fact that my food always tastes the same every time I make it, as I have a recipe for each seasoning blend that I always make. One of my favorite seasonings is Italian seasoning, I add it to my pizzas, pasta, and more complex dishes like Italian stuffed peppers, braised lamb shanks, and many many more. So it’s always handy to have a jar of Italian seasoning in my pantry.
What’s in Italian Seasoning?
Italian seasoning, as the name indicates, is a Mediterranean herb blend that normally includes oregano which is the main herb, as well as basil, rosemary, thyme, and garlic powder. Other common herbs are parsley, coriander, sage, and marjoram.

What’s the Difference Between Italian Seasoning and Herbs de Provence?
Both blends contain oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary. However, other herbs like savory, lavender, fennel and sage, and tarragon are added to Herbs de Provence. If you’re looking to buy a really good electric spice grinder that you can use for spices and herbs, then I recommend this Cuisinart spice grinder (currently on sale for just $36, it went down from $70). This is the grinder that we used at the cookery school when I did my chef training, it’s so efficient and the reason why I love it because it comes with a removable stainless steel bowl (most cheaper spice grinders come with built-in bowls which makes them so difficult to clean). And you can just pop the bowl in the dishwasher! It’s also great for grinding nuts. The KitchenAid spice grinder is also great, it comes with 2 bowls and that’s perfect if you also would like to grind coffee.
Storing Seasoning Blends
Homemade spice and herb blends last much longer than any ground blend that you buy from a store. So store in an airtight jar in a cool dry place for up to a year.
