It doesn’t get any more German than this Weisswurst Eintopf (sausage one pot, in German). It’s like a Germany sausage and potato casserole made with traditional sausage, the sauce is so delicious because of the grainy mustard seeds and German (Bavarian) beer. Munich, which is in the state of Bavaria, is traditionally where Oktoberfest takes place.

When is German Oktoberfest?

Did you know that Oktoberfest is not the entire month of October? It starts the middle of September to the beginning of October. Oktoberfest 2023 is Saturday 16th September to Tuesday 3rd October. Bratwurst is one of my favorite German foods, especially when served with sautéed onions and peppers like my Beer Braised Bratwurst (Bier Bratwurst).  If you’ve ever been to Germany, they sell sausages everywhere. It is a popular snack item that is sometimes served with just grainy or spicy mustard. I used the grainy for this recipe which has amazing flavor and texture that is added from the mustard seeds. When it comes to the beer for this stew, I went with a traditional Bavarian beer. There are 3 that I find in many grocery stores, Spaten Lowenbrau and Paulaner and all are excellent choices. I used Spaten this time ‘round. If you want to get in on the Oktoberfest celebrations, I have a few more Oktoberfest recipes:

German Sausage and Potatoes Serving Suggestions

This beer, sausage and potatoes are perfect on their own, but why not serve with a side of sauerkraut or cabbage? You can also add seasonal vegetables like carrots, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash or pumpkin. *Note: Popular brands are Paulaner, Lowenbrau and Spaten
