An addictive, savory, homemade green onion dip that has flavor from both charred green onions and fresh green onions. You can use it as a chip dip or an easy appetizer for your game and movie nights. It’s perfect for any occasion. One of the best things about this dip is its convenience. It’s a creamy dip you serve cold, so it stays fresh throughout the party. You can even make it a couple of days ahead and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. I love these kinds of low-effort dips. They allow you to be fully present and enjoy the party without worrying about cooking and reheating. This chip dip is inspired by my caramelized onion dip, which is made with sauteed onions and Greek yogurt. It pairs well with Chicken wings(try my air fryer bbq chicken wings), and fresh veggies like celery sticks, carrot sticks, and bell peppers. So, why wait? Gather your friends, fire up the TV, or set up the game console, and indulge in this irresistible homemade green onion dip. It’s a crowd-pleaser that will impress the socks out of your guests.
Ingredients
Here is what you need to make flavorful green onion dip See the recipe card for quantities. The sour cream and cream cheese give it a spreadable, soft, cheesy texture. Green onions, aka scallions, give this dip its prominent flavor. We only need the green parts of the green onion. Here are some common substitutions for the ingredients.
Cream Cheese - You can use Greek yogurt, mascarpone cheese, or cottage cheese too. Sour Cream - Substitute with Greek yogurt Green Onions - Onions, Chives, or Garlic chives are a great option too. Garlic - Instead of fresh garlic, you can also use garlic powder or garlic flakes. Cayenne Pepper - Smoked paprika, sweet paprika, banana peppers, or jalapenos Lemon Juice - For the tangy flavor, you can use red wine vinegar too. Salt - Regular, kosher, or sea salt.
You could make the famous Kraft green onion dip, but when you use fresh ingredients, the texture, taste, and flavor are always in better control. This homemade version is better than the classic green onion dip recipe.
How to make Green Onion Dip
Here is how to make this green onion chip dip
Step 1: Prep
Roughly chop up the green onions and peel the garlic clove. You do not need precision here, as we will be blending the dip
Step 2: Char the Green Onions
This step is optional but in my opinion, it adds a whole lot of flavor to the dip. If you are making this in the summer season, you can grill the green onions instead of sauteing them. Take half the green onions and two cloves of garlic, and saute them in a pan on high heat till they char a bit.
Step 3: Blend
Add everything to a blender or a food processor - cream cheese, sour cream, charred green onions, garlic, fresh green onions, salt, and lemon juice. Blend until the green onions have been blitzed together, and the dip turns green. This homemade charred spring onion dip will be better than any store-bought version. I promise!Serve it in a bowl with chips and other dippers like fresh-cut veggies.
Serve
Serve it with
Chips and crisps - Serve this creamy dip with your favorite potato chips, tortilla chips, bagel chips, and pita chips. Using the air fryer, here is an easy way to make stale pita bread into crispy chips. Healthy Dippers - Raw vegetables like Celery sticks, bell peppers & carrot sticks. Sauce for French Fries, Sweet potato wedges, chicken wings, and crispy fried popcorn shrimp. Charcuterie Board - Add a few more dips like roasted red pepper feta dip, black bean corn feta dip, or a refreshing Greek tzatziki dip.Maybe a hot dip like this chicken jalapeno popper dip. Variations
Here are some variations to this popular easy dip recipe.
Spicy - This dip is not very spicy, but you can choose to add more cayenne pepper or smoked paprika, or jalapenos to the dip to make it spicier. Corn Green Onion dip- Add grilled or boiled corn kernels to make this a summery dip. Healthier Green Onion Dip- Substitute both cream cheese and sour cream with Greek yogurt for a lighter option, like my healthier French onion dip with Greek Yogurt. Fresh Herbs - Swap spring onions with other herbs like cilantro, chives, and parsley.

Storage
Store this dip in an airtight container for 5-6 days. Make sure to cover the dip, otherwise, all your other stuff in the fridge will smell of cooked onions. (Been there, done that..multiple times..) I do not recommend freezing the dip as the texture changes way too much. But if you have to freeze leftover dip, you will need to blend it again to make it smooth and creamy.
