Sometimes there is nothing better than a simple cocktail. This crisp and slightly sweet champagne cocktail has become my new favorite! It is so easy to make and the flavor is amazing. This is a great cocktail to celebrate with.
Garnish Your Cocktail
A simple lemon twist is the perfect garnish for this simple champagne cocktail. To make the lemon twist, cut a slice of fresh lemon. Make a small cut in the skin and then pull the skin off the rest of the lemon. I like to then roll it up and secure it with a chip clip while I throw together the cocktail. Then take off the clip and pop it on the edge of the glass.
Sugar cube: This gives your cocktail a layer of sweetness and is responsible for the fountain of bubbles that occurs when you add the champagne, making this cocktail truly sparkle. Look for sugar cubes in the baking aisle of your grocery store. They last forever in your pantry. While often we use Simple Syrup to sweeten cocktails, only a sugar cube will produce the fountain of bubbles. Bitters: Spirits infused with herbs and other botanicals, bitters are a bar staple. Angostura bitters, the most common type of bitters, are also featured in the classic Old Fashioned. Just a few dashes are needed to change the flavor and essence of a cocktail.Cognac: A type of brandy made from distilled white wine. While cognac is preferred in this recipe, any brandy would work. Champagne: Read more on choosing a chilled bottle of champagne for this recipe below.
Start with a sugar cube. Put one in the bottom of each of your champagne flutes. Soak the sugar cube with a few dashes of bitters. Add the cognac. Pour it right over the sugar cube.Top with champagne. Fill your glass with champagne and garnish with a lemon twist. Enjoy!
Buying Champagne
While this is a champagne cocktail, prosecco or another sparkling wine can be used. A top-shelf bottle isn’t necessary, but I would recommend using a bottle of champagne that you enjoy the flavor of. Be sure that your bottle of champagne is chilled and open it just when you are ready to make your cocktails so the bubbles are fresh.
