Key Ingredients
Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below. You only need a few pantry ingredients to make this healthy bread machine recipe. It is recommended that you add the ingredients to your bread maker in the following order (liquids first, dry ingredients, and yeast is last):
Water: Water mixes everything else together into a cohesive dough. Olive Oil is used mainly for flavor. If you prefer, you can substitute another oil or melted unsalted butter. Sugar: The sugar helps activate the yeast, and proof the dough. It also helps create a nice crust. Sugar can be substituted with honey or maple syrup, or left altogether if making a sugar-free loaf. Salt: Salt is important for flavoring, you can reduce it if you’re watching your sodium intake. Strong Whole Wheat Bread Flour: The type you should search for in the US and Canada will be labeled as “Whole wheat flour”. In the UK and Australia, this is called “Strong wholemeal bread flour”. It will have a coarser, more grainy texture than white flour. Instant Yeast: Instant yeast is the right choice when deciding what type of yeast to buy for your bread maker bread. You may also see “bread maker yeast”. This is also Instant yeast, just with a different label, so feel free to use either. Active Dry Yeast won’t properly bloom in the bread maker, so don’t use that here.
How To Make Seed Bread in a Bread Machine
Add Ingredients: Toss the ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the following order: Water, Oil, Salt, Sugar, Flour, All the seeds, and lastly, Yeast.
Set Up and Turn On: Add the bread pan to the bread machine, close the lid, and plug in the machine. Choose the wholemeal or whole wheat bread setting, medium size, and start the machine with your chosen program. Cool: After the machine ends the baking cycle and beeps, unplug it, open the lid, and remove the pan from the machine with kitchen mitts or kitchen towels. Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then shake it out of the pan and allow it to cool completely. Carefully remove the paddle from the bottom of the loaf if it got stuck there.
Storing Tips
Make sure that your loaf has cooled compltely then store in a large plastic bag, or a breadbox and store at room temperature for 4-5 days. It also freezes very well, I recommend slicing it and freezing for up to 2 months.
Does it matter what order I put the ingredients in the bread maker?
The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you to add the liquids first, then the dry ingredients. The instant yeast always goes in last. This ensures that the yeast is separated from the liquids until the kneading begins and is an important step to follow.
What type of yeast do I use in the bread machine?
Choose Rapid rise yeast, Instant yeast, or Bread Machine yeast. According to Fleishmann’s Yeast’s website, the three are exactly the same, just sold under different names. Active Dry yeast is different from the others, and not recommended for bread machine recipes.
What bread machine should I buy?
This Hamilton Beach, programmable bread maker, is very well-rated and available at a reasonable price. You can buy more expensive bread makers, but I would start with a basic one until you’re comfortable and know that you want to use it often.
Why didn’t my loaf rise?
You should always make sure that your yeast is fresh and active. It could be that your yeast is dead, or you added too much salt or sugar, or you forgot to add the yeast.
Why did my bread rise too much?
You probably added too much yeast.
Why is my dough not coming together?
If this happens for some reason, add more liquid (1 tablespoon at a time) until a ball of dough is formed.
Why is my dough too sticky?
You need to add more flour, add it gradually (1 tablespoon at a time) until a ball of dough is formed. Enjoy making your own homemade seed bread with your bread maker! Don’t forget to pin this recipe so you don’t lose it. © Little Sunny Kitchen
