Indian mashed potato cakes

You won’t believe how simple it is to make these vegan Indian mashed potato cakes, also known as Aloo Tikki. This recipe is fuss-free, packed with flavour, and a great way to use up leftover mashed potatoes. Feel free to add in any ingredients such as cooked vegetables, onion, ginger, garlic, grated paneer or cheese for a variation. Aloo Tikki is versatile and can be served as a snack or as a component of chaat. There are many ways to cook Aloo Tikki, such as baking in the oven, grilling, pan-frying, shallow-frying, deep-frying, or even air-frying.

What is Aloo Tikki?

Aloo Tikki or Aloo Tikka is a popular street food in India, made with mashed potatoes, herbs and spices. They are then shaped into small patties and deep-fried or oven-baked. It is also popularly known as Aloo Tikka, Aloo Patties, Alu Pattice, Aloo Pattices, spicy Indian potato cakes, potato cutlet and Indian potato patties.

How to make Aloo Tikki Recipe?

To make Potato tikki, mix together potatoes, ground cumin, red chilli powder, coriander leaves, green chilli, salt and some cornflour. Shape into 8 patties and cook them until golden. Recipe notes: If you don’t have corn flour, use rice flour instead.

Variations ( Change it up)

For a variation, add more ingredients like green peas, mixed vegetables, cheese or grated paneer. You can also add diced onion, ginger, garlic and sprinkle of Instant Garam Masala or curry powder to the patties. Mix white or brown bread into the mashed potatoes and make a patties.

This easy Aloo Tikki Recipe is quite versatile and can be served in many ways.

Serve them on its own with a sprinkle of chaat masala and your favourite chutneys, such as mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or yogurt sauce.Use them as a base for Ragda Patties or Dahi aloo tikki chaat, popular Indian street food dishes.Serve them as a side dish to a main course of paneer curry or black dal.Serve them with a side of yogurt and a sprinkle of chaat masala for a tangy and spicy flavour.Put Aloo tikki in a burger bun along with fresh salsa and chutneys, making it a perfect street food.

How to make Crispy Aloo tikki step by step?

Cook the Potatoes: Use leftover mashed potatoes. If not cook the potatoes in the instant pot pressure cooker or in a saucepan. Mash the potatoes with masher or a ricer. Do not use a blender or food processor. Combine the ingredients mashed potatoes, Chilli Powder, Cumin Powder, Salt, chopped coriander leaves and corn flour. Mix the ingredients until smooth and well combined.

Make Potato Patties

Spread some oil between your palm. Pinch a portion of the potato mixture and make a ball.With a gentle press, shape the potato balls into a patties. Repeat the process for the rest of the potato patties. Makes 8 patties.

How to pan fry Aloo tikki?

To pan fry Aloo Tikki, start by heating 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan. Once hot, place the potato cakes in the pan and fry until they turn golden brown on one side. Flip the patties and continue frying for an additional 3-4 minutes until the other side is golden brown. Drain the tikki on a kitchen tissue. Keep in mind that the edges may not be as golden brown as if you were deep frying.

How to grill Aloo tikki?

To grill Aloo Tikki, first brush the pan and the potato patties with oil. Place the patties on the grill and cook for a total of 10 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

How to make Aloo Tikki in the Air fryer

Brush cooking oil on the aloo tikki patties. Place them in the air fryer basket and air fry at 180C for 15 - 20 minutes or until golden.

How to deep fry aloo tikki patties?

To deep fry Aloo Tikki patties, begin by heating oil in a deep pan. Carefully add the patties to the hot oil and fry them for a few minutes until they are golden brown. Remove the patties from the oil using a slotted spoon or tongs and place them on a kitchen towel to drain off excess oil. Serve the patties hot.

How to make Aloo Tikki for fasting on festival days?

Use the same method as in the recipe card, with a few substitutions.
